Chilly torrential rain all night and through this morning. {sigh} Bleak, yet still warm enough for shorts and t-shirt by afternoon. One of those days that cross over the seasons and make it difficult to decide what to wear, never mind what to eat.
See, I deem certain meals "winter food" and refuse to make some of Hubby's favorites during the summer months. He doesn't understand this! But really, who the hell wants to be baking bread when it's 95 degrees out, or eat a weighty meal when you're sweltering in 100% humidity?!?! (um...wouldn't that be rain? Never mind)
Which circles me back to this seasonal cross-over day and my somewhat grudging agreement to Hubby's request for Shepard's Pie, though in my mind, this is a winter meal.
And it's still summer. Damn it.
So the ground beef is defrosting in the microwave. I see the microwave as a handy storage box to allow food to defrost while keeping it out of puppy temptation. I rarely actually start the cursed thing. It does look pretty though, mounted over my stove.
I'll never forget - God knows I've tried - back in the early '80's when Tupperware came out with "microwavable Tupperware", along with a microwave cookbook. Sorry, but those two words are just not congruous. But Mom was excited to try it out. Sadly, I will never get the picture of that grey-skinned, shiny-slick "roasted" chicken wafting in the steam of that microwavable Tupperware. {shudder!}
Putting that tasty image...and your wonder over how I ever learned to cook...back into the recesses of our mind, let's get on to making the best darn (winter) Shepard's Pie in August!
Our faithfully hungry Lily has assumed her usual cooking post and is ready to get tasting:
